Find a Doctor

We work closely with our own Clinical Advisory Team who are specialist consultant endocrinologists (endos) who are experts in their field. Endocrinology is the study of hormones. Our advisors are leaders in calcium and bone research and educate healthcare professionals in the management of the endocrine conditions of  hypoparathyroidism and hyperparathyroidism.

All hypoparathyroidism patients should be under the care of an endocrinologist for life.

Find an NHS doctor

Choose and Book is a national electronic referral service which gives patients a choice of place, date and time for their first outpatient appointment in a hospital or clinic.

Specialist Referrals by your GP

You are entitled to ask for a referral for specialist treatment on the NHS. In fact, with a rare condition we recommend it. Not all endocrinologists have experience in managing parathyroid conditions. However, whether you will get the referral depends on what your GP feels is clinically necessary in your case.

Who do I choose?

By joining our support groups you will be able to  find doctors in your area who come with personal recommendations from happy fellow patients.

To check lists of named surgeons who have reported the number of operations they carry out annually visit the audit page on the website of the British Association of Endocrine & Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS).  Scroll down to the list of de-anonymised data.

Private treatment

We always prefer to recommend NHS endocrinologists and surgeons. However in some cases a private referral may be needed, for various reasons, in which case we advise you to choose a doctor who also has a good NHS practice. Search our medical advisors to see if they run private clinics.

Imperial Endocrine Centre
This is a private endocrinology service within one of the most trusted teaching hospitals in London. The consultants (who include two of our own advisors) are internationally renowned physicians and surgeons with expertise in managing all aspects of thyroid and parathyroid  disorders and state of the art surgery.

Counsellors & Therapists

Receiving a diagnosis of a long term condition and learning to live with the impact this may have on your mental health, your life and the lives of those around you can be difficult. You may feel isolated particularly if family and friends don’t understand the new demands upon you. We recommend joining our support groups and finding a good counsellor to help you accept your condition and come to terms with the changes you are experiencing.
