At present, only Forteo PTH 1-34 is available in the UK but only off label and it is not licensed specifically for the treatment of hypoparathyroidism. Having fought so hard for parathyroid hormone (PTH) treatment since 2010 we are very excited to have not one but two new treatments currently going through the clinical trial and NICE approval process here in the UK which will, we hope, be specifically licensed for the treatment of hypoparathyroidism.
CALYPSO TRIAL
We are delighted to be working with Amolyt Pharma on the CALYPSO study which is the first trial on a PTH in the UK for many years. The study, will test a new investigational medication, called eneboparatide, to learn about its effects and safety for people with low or absent parathyroid hormone levels. The study centres in Norwich, Leicester and Oxford are now closed to further patients..
YORVIPATH
The MHRA has just approved Ascendis Pharma‘s Yorvipath (PTH1-34) as a treatment for chronic hypoparathyroidism in adults in the UK which is exciting news. Approval from NICE is still required and, as stakeholders, we are involved in that process. You can help too by taking part in the survey we will send to you in early June 2024. If all goes well your endocrinologist will be able to prescribe Yorvipath for you from the early part of 2025. Ascendis will apply to the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC). In the meantime you may be able to access Yorvipath via an Individual Funding Request if your case warrants it.
NIFTy (now closed)
The NIFTy trial is for people in the UK who are having thyroid surgery. Its aim is to find out whether using near-infrared fluorescence imaging could reduce the number of people whose parathyroid glands become damaged during thyroid surgery. We are very proud to be working closely with surgeon Saba Balasubramanian and his team at Sheffield University on this study.
